Agricultural production and productivity constraints and opportunities in Dasenech and Nyagatom districts of South Omo Zone, Ethiopia

The economy of the South Omo Zone heavily relies on livestock and crop production, but there are multiple challenges constraints that affecting these sectors. It is important to identify issues at grassroots level because approach delivering agricultural technologies from top-down not effective. This study was conducted assess production productivity opportunities in Dasenech Nyagatom districts Ethiopia. To achieve intended purpose, one Kebele chosen each district, pastoral agro-pastoral research extension group (PAPREG), which consisted about 25 agro-pastoralists (15 males ten females) formed after conducting a community meeting. existing varieties, per hectare, prevailing agronomic practices, breeds, feed bases, animal husbandry system, technological demands constraints, were forwarded PAPREG members. results showed shortage improved varieties gasoline ranked first second both districts, while drought third sixth district. Crop diseases pests fifth lack awareness practices Dasench shortages, disease parasite prevalence, limited access veterinary services as first, third, respectively. In Dasench, breed forage seeds fourth, Nyagatom, it fifth. pastoralists strongly preferred cultivating Panicum grass, whereas Nygatom sorghum. availability fertile farmland sustainable River present for small-scale producers investors.
